The
Internet and the World Wide Web are often used
synonymously but they are different. The World Wide Web (WWW) also called the
web is a subset of the internet.
The
World Wide Web began in March 1989, when Tim Berners - Lee working at Counsel European
Pour la Recherche Nucleaire (CERN) i.e European Organization for nuclear
research at Geneva Switzerland proposed the project as a better means to
communicate research idea among members of the various scientific
organizations.
The
web is a series of interconnected services that supports specially formatted
documents. The documents are formatted in a language called HyperText Markup Language
(HTML) that supports links to other documents as well as graphics, audio, and
video files. This means that you can switch from one document to another just
by clicking on marked text.
Web
pages are connected to one another on the web. For example, you can view an
Excel worksheet in a word document by creating a hyperlink to the worksheet.
When the mouse pointer is placed on a hyperlink the pointer automatically
changes to a hand.
One
may have a question of who owns and manages such a huge network of computers.
The answer –no single organization or person owns the web. CERN is the place
where the World Wide Web initiative originated. Other organizations through the
world also participate in cooperation with the world wide web initiative.
The
current home of the World Wide Web initiative is the Massachussets Institute of
Technology (MIT) in the United State.
